No big deal, it all got done.Īs for the result, I have a much faster MacBook which opens applications with ease (including MS Office which I dreaded opening as it took so long), and just performs better. I found a magnetic screwdriver useful in removing the screws, maybe not so useful in replacing the screws as they would change the positioning of the screws. Screwing the case back on was a little fiddly as a couple of the screws wouldn't get into the right position, but got there in the end. I gave the inside of the casing a good wipe with a dry cloth as it was dusty, and the replacement of the memory cards was as simple as the Apple support pages described: they're small parts so just employ common sense and be gentle in the removal of the old cards and replacing with the new, but it literally was a 5-minute job.

You'll need a small screwdriver to unscrew the bottom casing, and as other reviews have said, be careful in remembering which screws go where as they are not all the same length (3 are long and the rest short). These arrived promptly, and were well packaged. It's really important to use the right memory cards for your laptop, and the Apple support pages will tell you which you need for yours - I just Googled the name of the one I needed and found my way here.

I saw the guidance on how to upgrade memory on the official Apple website (Google 'upgrading MacBook Pro RAM', and find the link to the Apple support pages titled 'MacBook Pro - how to remove or install memory - Apple Support'), and it seemed as simple as unscrewing the bottom casing, removing the old memory cards and replacing with the new ones, so I thought I'd give it a try.

I had enquired into upgrading the memory by an authorised Mac repair shop a couple of years ago and was quoted about £170 and thought it wasn't worth it so left it. I ordered these memory cards in a desperate attempt to improve the incredibly sluggish performance of my MacBook Pro (early 2011 model). But it would be broken if anyone threw it or stepped on it. One downside, which is Amazon's or whoever sent its issue, they just sent it in a thin cardboard a4 pack. Great buy if you have an old mac which needs its last refresh before it becomes obsolete.Īny questions then please leave them and I'll try and answer them. I haven't contacted them, so I'm not sure what the customer service is like, but last year it was great. Have a look on YouTube if you dont know how.

Take your time and watch the bottom piece of RAM. If you mess up the screw head, then you're screwed yourself. I have a pack of interchangeable ones for little things like computers. Also I'd advise you to use a nice screwdriver with a magnetic head. I use a sheet of paper, Draw a rectangle and then push the the screws in the stared bits on the paper, That way I can put every screw back in the hole it came from. It's very easy to install it too, just turn it off put it on a non static surface and watch where you take the screws out, as 3 are different lengths. If you have a late 2011 Macbook pro 13" then have no fear, this will work. I havent put it through a lengthy test yet, but the 8gb I brought a year ago has had some hard tests.Īnyway. In my other slot I also have Timetec RAM, and that has been in about a year, now I've matched it with the correct amount (having different size RAM in slots slows the Mac down a bit) so it runs a bit faster. Timetec's RAM is well worth the money and getting some back street computer shop to do it for me for 100 quid. It feels faster though and my fan doesnt get faster when I put it through a decent test. It has increased my score by about 40 odd, but it wasnt a huge jump up from 10gb to 16gb.

It makes startup time 40 seconds faster and having done Nova Benchmarking tests before and after, plus timing how long it takes to load paid off. I used to have 8, then 10, now 16gb of DDR3 RAM. Timetec's RAM is solid and easy to put in. I hadn't changed any RAM in my Macbook pro for a few years and it's coming it the end of it life as updates have stopped and I cant seem to install High Sierra.Īnyway that isnt their fault.
